Why is it that some women just look amazing in their head covering, whether wig or tichel, and others just look so, so. Wearing a head covering is not unlike many other types of apparel and you’ve got to do it right.
The following 4 tips will help you look even better in your head covering.
1. Avoid the Weird Wig Bulge
If you are wearing a wig, you will want your hair to lay as flat as possible under the wig in order to allow the wig to look as natural as possible. Getting your hair pinned up right is very critical, or you’ll have a nice bump. We have found that one of the best ways for longer or thicker hair is to start by making a very low pony at the nape of the neck, and flip it towards the top of your head and then fasten it with a barrette. Or, for thicker hair, make two low pigtails, flip them and crisscross them to the opposite sides of your head and fasten each side with a flat barrette.
With short hair, you can’t just throw on a pony and hide it, there are always those little pieces looking to escape and wave, “hello world”! Snap clips are great for shorter hair, as well as wearing a flat headband or undercover under the wig. The Milano Wig Grip is great for holding your wig and hair in place.

2. Bring out your natural beauty
I have yet to meet a woman with blue eyes who doesn’t look great in blue. The same applies for head coverings. For example a blue applique on a beret or a blue pattern on a pre-tied. Don’t focus on matching your head cover only to your outfit, think of your best feature and maximize on it. Green or hazel eyes with greenish prints or appliques. And there’s nothing like a white head covering to bring out a tan.
You do have to use a little discretion with this tip, though. White head coverings on a pale face might do more harm than good, and the same goes for grey – leaving you looking washed out. (Which could a good thing if you are looking to be sent to bed a little early…)
3. Flatter your face shape
Face shape plays and important role in whether or not a particular head cover will look good on you. Larger faces tend to do better with more generous head coverings or head coverings with wider weaves or patterns. Smaller faces will look nicer in smaller and more compact hair coverings, finer weaves and smallish prints.
Often people wonder about the tails on a pre-tied bandana. Long tails look great on taller women, and short look better on shorter women. Doing the opposite tends to make tall people look taller and short women look shorter, so unless that is your aim, stick to long for tall and short for short.
4. Match your head covering to the occasion
Some women seem to live in their wigs: kids’ bathtime, frying schnitzels, running a marathon… nothing will deter them from wearing a wig. Unless you are one of those women, you’ll find yourself reaching for that comfortable tichel or beret once in a while. While comfort is important, you don’t need to lose the look. Have a special head covering set aside for Shabbos and a different one for exercise, and others for in between! I think this beret hat with a flower detail is cute and sporty.
This way, you’ll always look great, be dressed for the occasion and you’ll feel great about yourself, too!
